I've currently got my main character as the main attacker, with Alistair defending and Wynne and Morrigan healing and attacking from afar respectively. In hindsight the whole Aedan attacking/Alistair defending thing IS pretty shite, but I had always thought a tank was simply someone who went all out rather than someone defensive with a high attack.
As I said I had relatively few problems with the game, but I always had that feeling I still wasn't really using the battle system to it's full extent, if that makes any sense? I just seem to constantly fail when there's waves of darkspawn, I get overwhelmed and pretty much die straight away. I think at one point I got down to one or two orcs, then died but I've only managed to get about 1 or 2 hits in on the archdemon when it calls the first wave of darkspawn. I don't even know if it comes back from the platform into reach or stays there

I'm seriously thinking about just going for the easy difficulty. I hate doing it (feels dirty

) but I plan on starting a new game soon anyway. Things like blood mages, reavers etc I didn't really think about until the end there when it was too late.
You obviously fucking own at this game though

A tanks job is absorb damage not deal it. If you are relying on your tank to do the most damage then you aren't using him right. This is what I would do in your shoes. Set yourself up as the tank with the best armor you have, preferably with something that gives you high resistence to fire, cold etc. Then turn on Shield Wall (which should be maxed out at this stage), Bravery and also keep spaming taunt to keep all the agrro on your tank. This will kepp a majority of the enemies away from your mages.
After that its good to have a ranged fighter or a third mage, two warriors is a waste of a spot. I prefer another nuke mage but some prefer Liliania or Zevran as Archers. Set Archers to pick off the enemies with the lowest health in the tactics screen. This is amazingly helpful cause your tank should always be aiming for the hightest health.
Set the healer to heal, and place all defensive buffs on your tank. Lifeward and defensive aura are great to cast on the tank, it makes the tank fuckin unstoppable.
Now your nuke mage is where you do 90% of the damage. I love using Blood mages cause of the blood wound spell, but other wise heres a combo that will kick the shite out of everyone. When your tank is surrounded by all enemies, which he always hould be (taunt), then cast Blizzard, then immediatly cast Tempest right on top of it. This is called storm of the century and its fuckin lethal. Just be careful cause your tank is in the middle of it taking damage too. Having him cold/electrical resistent really helps, other wise just kepp giving him health poultices, and have Wynn heal him.
These tactics made the whole game pretty easy for me. Give it a shot.
